I've been trying to batch load a lot of images and many fail for no clear reason. They are JPG, less than 2 GB in size.

Event Gallery does not care about the image size. But your server does. Do you get an error message? Do the images end up in /images/eventgallery/[folder] and you just don't see thumbnails?
