i have 5 different topics. each topic has text along with with some associated images. I would like the page to resemble the layout below ...

Topic 1

Text paragraph 1

I want the visitor to click on a image to enlarge the image ... click the "x" to reduce to thumbnail.

My problem is that when the visitor clicks on an image, a new page is displayed. I just want the image to enlarge on the existing page. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Did you set the mode parameter to "lightbox"? Keep in mind you can use the "component layouts" as well.
