I am really new to Joomla 3.3 and still trying to poke my way around a bit. My first project involves setting up a photo gallery within my site. I absolutely love the look and function of the Event Gallery extension. The way it does tiles looks great to me. I am not using their shopping functions at all and turned them off in order to make it solely a photo viewing site.
There is one major problem that I cannot get around. On the gallery page, all of the images assigned to a particular event are shown on one page (which is fine to a degree; it'd be nice if you could set it to show X number per page, but that's really a feature request). The problem is that instead of taking the root images and creating thumbnails from them when they are first uploaded (something I've seen other modules do), EventGallery uses the full-resolution images and simply uses the HTML size commands to shrink them down. The end result is that all of the full-resolution images are downloaded from server to the client and then re-sized by the browser into the thumbnail sizes. This is terrible for the bigger galleries:
- Painfully slow to load.
- Wastes a lot of bandwidth.
- And most critically of all is very hard on the client device that is viewing the site.
My PC running the latest stable version of Chrome when pulling up a gallery with about 110 4MP images, used over 1 gig of RAM to process them and took solid 3 minutes to download and re-size them all. That is terrible!
Is there some way to get Event Gallery to generate actual thumbnail images for the thumbnails?!
